Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Begin with a short greeting activity where students talk about their favorite hobbies and interests. Have students share one thing they did over the weekend with a partner. Introduce a short story about a family and ask students to predict what it might be about based on the title and cover illustration. Engage students in a vocabulary brainstorming session related to family and places, listing words they know on the board.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Oral Language: Organize a circle time where each student introduces a family member, describing their appearance and what they enjoy doing together. Conduct a role-play activity where students ask each other questions about their families and places they have visited. Reading: Guide students through a shared reading of a short passage about a family, highlighting key vocabulary words and phrases. Have students work in pairs to read a story about a place, taking turns to read aloud and discuss the setting and characters. Writing: Ask students to write a short paragraph about their family, including descriptive details and proper sentence structure. Provide a picture of a place and have students write a descriptive piece about what they see and imagine happening there. Writing Conventions: Conduct a mini-lesson on identifying and using nouns in sentences, using examples from the shared reading. Provide worksheets where students practice categorizing words as people, places, or things.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Oral Language: Reflect on the day's discussions by having students share one new thing they learned about their classmates' families or places in the community. Reading: Ask students to identify and discuss a vocabulary word they found interesting from the reading activities and explain why. Writing: Have students pair up and exchange their writing pieces, providing positive feedback and one suggestion for improvement. Writing Conventions: Conduct a quick review quiz where students identify nouns from sentences written on the board, discussing any corrections as a class.
