Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Introduce the day's topic by discussing the importance of family and community. Engage students in a short storytelling session where they share something unique about their family or community. Play a simple word association game focused on naming words related to family and places.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Oral Language: Students work in pairs to interview each other about their family members and practice speaking clearly. Conduct a class discussion where students describe their favorite place in their community using detailed sentences. Reading: Students read a short story about a family and highlight all the naming words they find. In small groups, students take turns reading paragraphs aloud and discussing the roles of different family members in the story. Writing: Guide students to write a short paragraph about their family, focusing on correct use of naming words. Students create a simple booklet titled 'My Community' where they write a sentence and draw a picture for each place. Writing Conventions: Students complete a worksheet where they match naming words with pictures to reinforce noun recognition. Conduct a mini-lesson on using capital letters for names and places, followed by practice sentences.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Oral Language: Reflect on the interview activity by discussing what students learned about their peers' families and how they felt while speaking. Reading: Ask students to share one new naming word they learned and discuss its significance in the story they read. Writing: Have students read their 'My Community' booklet to a partner and receive feedback on the clarity and creativity of their work.
