Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Engage learners in a circle time activity where they introduce themselves using their full names and one interesting fact about themselves. Play a game where learners pass a ball around, and whoever catches it must say something they admire about their family. Show pictures of various places (e.g., playground, market, school) and ask learners to describe what they see and whom they might meet there.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Oral Language: Conduct a classroom dialogue where learners take turns describing a family member, focusing on their characteristics and what makes them special. Organize a storytelling session where each learner shares a short story about their favorite place and why they like it. Reading: Provide a short story featuring various characters and places, and ask learners to identify which are common and which are proper nouns. Read a passage aloud and have learners raise their hands whenever they hear a proper noun, discussing its significance in the story. Writing: Guide learners to write a short paragraph about themselves, ensuring they use at least two proper nouns. Ask learners to create a simple family tree, labeling each member with a proper noun, and describing one trait about them. Writing Conventions: Provide a list of words and have learners categorize them into common and proper nouns, explaining their choices. Facilitate an editing exercise where learners correct sentences by capitalizing proper nouns and correcting any errors.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Oral Language: Reflect on what they learned by sharing one new thing they discovered about their classmates or family members during the activities. Reading: Have learners share one new proper noun they learned from the reading activities and explain its significance. Writing: Ask learners to share one sentence from their writing that includes a proper noun and discuss why it was important to their paragraph. Writing Conventions: Conduct a peer review session where learners exchange their work and check for the correct usage of common and proper nouns.
