Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Begin with a group discussion on a popular story, asking students to share their favorite parts and why they like them. Introduce a short listening comprehension exercise where students listen to a passage and answer questions about the main idea. Conduct a vocabulary game where students guess the meaning of new words from context clues. Engage students in a quick brainstorming session on different conjunctions they know and their uses.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Oral Language: Conduct a listening exercise where students identify the main idea and supporting details of a short story read aloud. Have students work in pairs to retell the story in their own words, focusing on the main idea and key details. Reading: Guide students in reading a passage and highlighting the main idea and key details. Ask students to work in small groups to find the contextual meaning of selected phrases from the text. Grammar Usage At Word: Introduce a conjunctions activity where students create sentences using simple conjunctions like 'and', 'but', 'or', 'nor'. Play a sentence construction game where students identify subjects and verbs in given sentences. Writing: Assign a task where students write a short argumentative paragraph and include a concluding statement. Guide students in peer reviewing each other's work, focusing on the conclusion and coherence. Using Writing Conventions: Conduct a mini-lesson on creating simple, compound, and complex sentences with examples. Ask students to practice writing sentences of different structures and share them with a partner. Extensive Reading: Encourage students to choose an age-appropriate book to read independently. Have students write a two-paragraph summary of their book, focusing on the main idea and key events.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Oral Language: Reflect on the listening exercise by asking students to share how identifying the main idea helped their comprehension.
