Display a stone, cup of water and inflated balloon as familiar examples of a solid, liquid and gas. Learners observe without tasting and describe the shape, flow and compressibility of each example. Groups rotate through the three examples and record what remains fixed, what takes the shape of its container and what fills the balloon. They then sort additional printed examples under solid, liquid or gas headings. Groups present reasons for their sorting. Use the inflated balloon to show that gas occupies space; do not boil water or use heat in this activity.
