| Indicator: B7.2.1.1.1 Describe compliant materials | Content Standard: B7.2.1.1 Demonstrate knowledge of basic concept of compliant materials |
| Performance Indicator: Learners can identify and describe a compliant material | T.L.R.(s): Kente fabric offcut, Leather offcut, Raffia strip |
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning Revise with learners to review their understanding in the previous lesson. | Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment Concrete-resource task: Set out these resources for each group: Kente fabric offcut; Leather offcut; Raffia strip. Learners inspect and safely handle each item, then use the items in the practical health, food, materials, or workshop task below.
Display a chart of pictures of materials on the board for learners to observe.
Guide learners to identify and describe compliant materials such as paper/card, fabric/textiles
Guide learners to explain what is meant by compliant materials E.g., Compliant materials are materials that have recognized, predictable and consistent properties such as paper/card, fabric/textiles. A material is a compliant material, if it conforms to a known performance criteria. The paper used is a compliant material The fabric is a compliant material Put learners in groups to sort out compliant materials from the variety of available materials.
Engage learners to write a summary of the explanation and sorting. | Phase 3plenary / reflections Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson. |
Component 2
Compliant Materials
Topic: Distinguish between types of compliant materials
| Strand: Materials for Production | Sub-strand: Compliant Materials |
| Indicator: B7.2.1.1.2 Distinguish between types of compliant materials | Content Standard: B7.2.1.1 Demonstrate knowledge of basic concept of compliant materials |
| Performance Indicator: Learners can Identify and classify compliant materials in their various categories | T.L.R.(s): Copy paper, Cardboard offcut, Kente fabric offcut |
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning Share performance indicators and introduce the lesson. | Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment Groups handle the Copy paper, Cardboard offcut and Kente fabric offcut and record each material's thickness, flexibility, texture and likely use. They classify the samples under paper, card and fabric and explain the evidence for each choice. Learners bend and fold each sample without damaging it, compare how it responds and select the most suitable material for a stated classroom product. | Phase 3plenary / reflections Take feedback from learners and summarize the lesson. |
