Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Play games and recite rhymes that learners are familiar with to begin the lesson. Ask learners questions to review their understanding in the previous lesson.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Display a Ghana map and identify broad areas associated with historical trade items. Learners locate the forest belt and savannah belt and discuss how communities exchanged goods. Groups inspect a tray of local barter-item samples and pictures such as salt, kola nuts, shea butter, pottery and cloth without tasting any item. They match each item to cowrie shells and source-area cards and place the match near the relevant area on the Ghana map. Learners role-play a simple barter exchange and explain how cowrie shells later served as a medium of exchange. Groups present one item-source match and its reason.
