Indicator (code): B2.1.2.1.1 Use conceptual understanding of addition, and subtraction to add, and subtract numbers to, 100Content Std (code): B2.1.2.1 Demonstrate conceptual understanding, of operations of addition and subtraction with, sums up to 100
Performance Indicator: Learners can use conceptual understanding of addition and, subtraction to add, and subtract numbers to 100Core Competencies: Problem Solving skills; Critical Thinking; Justification of Ideas;
T.L.R.(s): bottle tops, bundles of sticks, exercise booksKeywords: Number, Numbers, Subtraction
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Teacher calls out numbers from 1 to 20 Have learners to write number patterns in the air. Randomly call learners to write a said number on the board Engage learners to sing the song WE CAN COUNT We class two We can count We count 1,2,3,4,5 We count 6,7,8,9,10 We class two can count very well.
Get a viral picture, a trending news on twitter, Facebook,
YouTube and other social media handles. Discuss what is trending and invite learners to share their opinions on them.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Add a given set of numbers in two different ways. 35 + 54 and 54 + 35 e.g. 18 + 12 + 3 or and 3 + 18 + 12 Let learners understand by explaining why the order in which numbers are added does not change the sum. Give learners a set of numbers to add at their own pace. Encourage others by helping them to add. Introduce learners to the concept of zero. let learners understand that zero is a number which represent “nothing” Explain to learners why the difference or sum of two numbers is the same as the initial number when 0 is added or subtracted from that number. 27 + 0 = 27 e.g., why 55 – 0 = 55 or Guide learners to match a word problem to a missing addend 34 + ___ = 57 e.g., Guide learners to match a word problem to a missing subtrahend 27 - __ = 24 e.g. Guide learners to match a word problem to a missing minuend __ - 54 = 63 e.g. Create an addition or subtraction number sentence and word problem for a number up to 100 Example: Given the solution 53, create an addition or subtraction sentence with an answer of 53 and a corresponding word problem. For this activity, learners use bottle tops, bundles of sticks and exercise books to model the stated operation concretely and record matching number sentences and solutions.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Give learners task to complete whiles you go round to guide those who don’t understand. Give remedial learning to those who special help.
