Rhymes

Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Flash letter cards to learners for them to make its sounds. Ask pupils to write some letters in the air as you mention them
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Display the printed song or rhyme cards for learners to follow, then let groups keep the beat with the locally made drum and calabash rattle as they sing or recite. Have learners recite familiar rhymes. Introduce new rhymes by performing them. lead learners to echo-read the rhymes. Let learners recite the lines in groups/pairs and as individuals, as they tap or clap to the rhythm. Using word and sentence cards, guide learners to identify rhyming words and teach the accompanying actions
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Give learners task to complete while you go round the class to support those who might need extra help. Have learners to read and spell some of the keywords in the lesson

Have learners bring out all books from their bags Teacher inspects how clean learners keep their books. Teacher motivates learners who keeps their clean and hence introduce the lesson
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Display the Ghanaian picture storybook and let learners match the printed book-part cards to its front cover, back cover, spine and title page. Model how to open the book with clean hands, turn one page at a time and keep pages flat. In pairs, learners practise the actions, use the clean book-covering paper to protect the book and explain how they will store it neatly.

What have we learnt today? How to handle books Call out learners to summarize the important points in the lesson. Have pupils to demonstrate the good ways of handling books

Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Have a variety of age appropriate books for learners to make a choice from.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners read the Ghanaian storybook and the printed passage about a Ghanaian community, then record the target ideas or reading responses in exercise books with pencils. Using book tease or book talk, introduce the reading/ library time. Introduce picture or wordless books, pop-up and flip-the-page texts to learners. Using word and sentence cards, encourage them to read individually and in pairs, and provide support and encouragement.
