| Indicator (code): B5.1.2.2.1 know that some changes are, reversible, while others cannot be reversed | Content Std (code): B5.1.2.2 Know that substances can exist in, different physical states (solid, liquid, gas). |
| Performance Indicator: Learners can know that some changes are reversible,, while others cannot be reversed | Core Competencies: Problem Solving skills; Critical Thinking; Justification of Ideas; |
| T.L.R.(s): shea butter in a metal cup, bowl of teacher-provided warm water, printed reversible-and-irreversible change cards | Keywords: Reversible, Materials, Changes |
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning Engage leaners in the mystery box game The teacher brings a bag into the classroom that contains an object that has a connection to the lesson. Then it is passed around and learners try to determine what is in the bag just by feeling it. The student who guess right wins, and hence introduce the lesson.
Put students into groups of three 3 and number them 1-3.
Put three number statements up to the white board and ask students to explain the corresponding statements related to the lesson to their group. The group who explains well wins | Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment Learners describe solid shea butter in a metal cup. The teacher places the cup in a bowl of teacher-provided warm water so learners can observe safe melting without a flame.
Allow the cup to cool and observe the shea butter solidifying again. Learners explain why melting and solidifying are reversible changes in which no new substance forms.
Groups sort printed reversible-and-irreversible change cards showing safe familiar examples such as melting shea butter, freezing water, rusting iron and cooking an egg. Do not melt plastic or burn any material. | Phase 3plenary / reflections What have we learnt today? Reversible and irreversible changes Have leaners to summarize the important points in the lesson.
