GES 2026/2027 Academic Calendar Released for Basic Schools

The Ghana Education Service has officially released the 2026/2027 academic calendar for basic schools across the country. The calendar covers Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools and outlines reopening dates, vacation periods, mid-term breaks, and the scheduled dates for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to the release dated 6th May 2026, the academic year will be divided into three terms.

First Term

The first term will last for 15 weeks.

  • Reopening Date: 8th September, 2026
  • Closing Date: 17th December, 2026
  • Vacation Period: 18th December, 2026 to 4th January, 2027
  • Mid-Term Break: 5th and 6th November, 2026

Second Term

The second term will run for 12 weeks.

  • Reopening Date: 5th January, 2027
  • Closing Date: 25th March, 2027
  • Vacation Period: 26th March, 2027 to 19th April, 2027

Third Term

The final term of the academic year will last for 14 weeks.

  • Reopening Date: 20th April, 2027
  • Closing Date: 22nd July, 2027
  • Vacation Begins: 23rd July, 2027

BECE Examination Dates

The statement also announced that the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, 5th May to 12th May, 2027.

Mid-Term Breaks and Public Holidays

GES reminded all schools, parents, teachers, and stakeholders that public holidays within the academic year must be observed accordingly. The Service also confirmed that every term will include a two-day mid-term break for all basic schools.

Call for Preparation

School heads, teachers, parents, and guardians have been encouraged to take note of the approved dates and prepare adequately to ensure a smooth and successful academic year.
